An exploration of environmental sentiment from coastal communities in SW Scotland

LAND, a cry from a crow’s nest. LAND, where a ship’s journey begins and ends. LAND, where we live, shelter and where we grow our food.

The LAND project provides an opportunity to join a voyage of discovery centred around the majestic tall ship, La Malouine. Taking steps away from terra firma we invite you to express and signal your sentiments around land use, food production and climate change as you journey through imagination, celebration, hospitality and making.

What is it?

La Malouine, an 80ft LOD. Brigantine will be travelling around Solway ports during late 2021 and 2022 with local artists hosting a series of workshops for you to design and make novel maritime flags. Flags are a traditional way of signalling at sea and these community made flags from upcycled fabric are designed to express and signal environmental concerns and future hopes and, when flown all together on the tallship, will carry a spectacular and powerful environmental message.

At each port along the coast, the workshops will culminate in an event day, with a 'Dressing of the Ship’ celebration where a musical parade will lead to the flags being hoisted into the ship's rigging, with a participatory food and art event with live music on the quayside.

The first port will be Palnackie and the flags made there will be flown at The Landing Hub at COP26 in Glasgow as a message from Dumfries and Galloway to world leaders. See event information below.

Why should I join in?

Land aims to:

  • Welcome inclusive participation; join in the conversation to explore alternative ways of being as we search for a viable future for humanity and the planet.

  • Listen and put local sentiment at the heart of our climate action

  • Share your environmental signals as a collective display widely

  • Share a participatory Food Art event with a shared 'Roots of Soup' made from locally sourced ingredients

When and where is it?

Event Day No.1 is 30th Oct 2021 3-6pm Palnackie Harbour,

Dumfries & Galloway
